For my 16th birthday, I was given a charm bracelet.  My Mama took me to the store in the big city 40 miles away to chose charms.  I chose the birthday one, of course, and another caught my eye.  It was similar to this one - praying hands on one side and the Serenity Prayer on the other. As well as I can recall, this was the first time I had seen the Serenity Prayer.  I could relate to that prayer.  That was my second charm and I saved it until it was stolen from my daughter when she wore it to high  school

She had it on a chain around her neck and a young guy jerked it off her neck as she was walking from the bus.  Her neck was hurt a little.  Checked all the local pawn shops but  could not find it.  This was when we lived in Dallas.

It is my belief that alcoholism is a symbol of problem.  Take away the medication and it is really tough to work on those exsisting mental health issues.

And I believe that our genes do effect who we are moreso than even our environment.

Alcoholics come from all walks of life - in my case, I had not even seen any alcohol until I was almost grown.  Many people come from alcoholic homes and do not become one.  Education regarding the evils of alcohol is the best.  Because it is legal, I don't feel it is discussed enough - I discuss what it can do with my granddaughter.  She is aware of what drugs do through school and media.

Many times when my daughter was young she would ask me why alcohol was legal when it was so bad for you - and she lived with that.  This was a question I could not answer properly.

Alcohol is much like a cancer - once it takes your body over it is more and more progressive.

When I was 16, I did not know at age 50 I would be standing in a meeting (that had opened with the Serenity Prayer) in a circle , holding hands, humbly joining in The Lord's Prayer.  And I thank God and my Mama.

Being an alcoholic brings remorse, shame, and I could go on and on was to how bad we feel inside.

If you have a friend, family member, or just casually know someone who is a true alcoholic, don't try to understand, you would have to be there, and know that it is NOT YOUR FAULT. I say this especially to mother's of alcoholics.

Please be there when someone is ready to ask for help.

Thank you for letting me share.
